This year’s travel theme is “expensive island countries,” and so I start off with Australia and New Zealand for a week each.
We’ve arrived in LAX and are awaiting our plane to Sydney. It smells like old musty library without the books and the AC doesn’t seem to be entirely functional in this terminal. Yessssssss
On the upside, there was ok ramen and I got to witness the utter bewilderment of a Japanese tourist at the lack of trash cans and a place for your tray at the ramen place. Yes, in America we are savages and leave things on the table, you poor civilized creature.
After a fifteen hour plane ride and hopefully a good chunk of sleep, we’ll be in full-on summer land. It’s -20*F at home on Sunday and nearly 100 in Melbourne. Bring it on!
The plan:
Ride in planes for a long time
Arrive in Melbourne. Drive on the left after little sleep in a large city.
Bask in the sun until the 22nd:
- Phillips Island Nature Reserve and penguins
- Great Ocean Road
- Australian Open
- Food
- Have some vegemite
- Summer!

After a week in Melbourne, it’s off to New Zealand to see my host family (yay!) before heading off to raft til my arms fall off for five days on the Clarence River. You would think I would be semi-skilled at boats as the last trips have involved long canoe trips and/or kayaking but alas this is not the case. I just enjoy tormenting myself to see nature.
After rafting and more Christchurch, it’ll be back to the States on the first.
