Penguins and hagglunds and snow, oh my!

Saturday, it rained most of the day…and it was pretty cold! We decided we needed to go somewhere colder and indoors, so we headed to the International Antarctic Center near the airport. America apparently launches all of its Antarctic expeditions from Christchurch, along with a handful of other countries, and they’re just starting their expedition season.

First was a visit to the storm room, which got down to about 0* F at its coldest. It was just like being back home, except we have less ice slides and nobody stands around in the cold for fun unless they’re drunk.

Next up, hagglund ride! Those are the vehicles that explore the Antarctic. They double as boats and also are a good way to get money out of tourists. Some of the inclines the hagglunds can handle are crazy, and the ride was pretty fun, too!

After learning a bit more about the bases in the Antarctic, we watched the penguins get fed. The center takes in penguins that can’t be rehabilitated into the wild, so a few of them had some injuries. They were big hams!

The Sinus Gods decided to punish me for my attempt at a full day without any medication, and I was bedridden for most of the evening. Fortunately, I recovered in time to eat some tasty homemade curry. My favorite!

Curry!!!!
